SFI Marches to Restore Democracy in Education Sector

SFI marched through the streets of Kolkata to restore democratic milieu in education sector. Slogans from students echoed the streets in protest of forceful takeover of students’ unions, harassment and assaults on teachers, professors and non-teaching staffs, hooliganism and vandalism in colleges. Demands of proper peaceful students’ union elections and restoration of democracy in campus premises were also made from the procession. The march started from the College Street to the Y Channel of Dharmatala. The march was led by SFI State Secretary Debojyoti Das and State President Madhuja Senroy and other state leadership.

The overall anarchy in the state has created anxiety among all stairs of the citizens. No one is safe except the miscreants. The state administration is apathetic to the situation. The campuses are not being exempted from this turmoil. One one hand the democratic environment is being demolished by the anarchist forces and the apathetic state administration, and on the other hand the steady attempt of saffronisation by the Hindutwa forces of the central government has disturbed the academic environment.  The only vanguard to these attacks is the Left student organisations, led by the SFI. In the context of this tripartite struggle, slogans were raised in favour of democracy instead of violence, and expansion of education instead of saffronisation.

Apart from protest against campus violence and demand to restore democracy, a few recent issues also featured in the protests. A Trinamool leader has shot Aditi Adhikary, a teacher of Haridaspur High School. SFI strongly condemn the incident. A Class XII student Sudeb Das has been shot dead in Chinsurah. Eve teasing has reached the heights of irritation for the students of Lady Brabourne College. SFI also protested the scam in the merit list of the MCI Joint Entrance. Absence of students’ representatives in the governing councils of the universities and colleges were also condemned from the march. SFI also resolved to fight privatisation and saffronisation. And also, the students took an oath to not let the state government establish private universities in the states in its bid to commercialise the higher education.
