The campuses of West Bengal continue to be under an almost permanent phase of chaos and violence. The ruling Trinamool Congress and its student wing Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The process, which had started with the victory of TMC in 2011 assembly elections, has eroded the academic environment and campus democracy completely.

In the latest incident, gunshots were fired in the Raignaj University College, when the elected students’ union of the college declined their demand of shutting down the college over the death of one of the TMCP functionaries who apparently had no association with the college. Just a few days ago, Krishna Prasad Jana, a 21 year old student of Sajanikant Mahavidyalaya of West Midnapore district was beaten to death by TMCP goons for the crime of declining to participate in the felicitation of the ministers of the state government. The teachers of Calcutta University were beaten up in broad day light by the goons who are on the muster rolls of the ruling party. These are a pointer to the general worsening of the law and order situation in the state and particularly in the educational institutions of the state.

CEC of the Students’ Federation of India expresses deep concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The attacks on the democratic movement particularly in the educational institutions is also a reflection of the deep anxiety that the ruing TMC has from the battle of ideas in these realms which may eventually act as a catalyst to topple this reign of terror. RSS-BJP has also been trying to use this lawlessness to create communal wedge in the state. We appeal the democratic sections across the country to stand in solidarity with the fighting students of Bengal. We need to underline that the threat over democratic rights in one part of the country, is a threat to the democratic rights in the entire country.
