2nd April 2015, Kolkata: 2nd April is a historic day in the students’ movement of West Bengal. 2 years ago, Com. Sudipto Gupta, one of our State Committee members, was brutally beaten to death by the West Bengal police in police custody, as hundreds of our comrades had courted arrested in a civil disobedience movement demanding the ban on students’ union elections to be revoked.
The students had gathered in College Square from where the rally would eventually start. As the procession started, our comrades sold thousands of copies of Chhatro Songram bulletin in memory of our beloved martyr Com. Sudipto. Huge procession of comrades from the districts emerged from Howrah and Sealdah railway stations, and joined the procession in the College Street. Numerous other rallies eventually joined the rally in its way to Dharmatala.
The leaders of 4 left students’ organisations SFI, AISF, PSU and AISB commemorated the martyrs at College Street. SFI state committee secretary Com. Debojyoti Das, state president Com. Madhuja Senroy, All India General Secretary and MP Com. Ritabrata Banerjee and several leaders of other students’ organisations delivered brief speeches. Thereafter, Left Front Chairman and a former student leader of the sixties, Com. Biman Bose briefly spoke a few words about the occasion and relevance of the martyrdom of Com. Sudipto Gupta.
The police had done their bit by non-cooperating with the students who came from Sealdah and Howrah stations in their way to College Street. But nothing could deter the protest and passion of the students who had an overwhelming spontaneous participation in today’s procession.
